The Wadden islands and the Oerol festival
Most people who visit Holland visit the cities and the towns. Then some other people visit the country side, the Delta Works or the beach. One part of the country that is often overlooked, however, is the Wadden sea. It is a sea that runs from the north of Holland up to Denmark.
To the north of the Wadden sea, you find the Wadden islands. And there could be no greater time to talk about it, because in a week the Oerol festival begins on the Wadden island of Terschelling. Festivals are a big thing in the summer in Holland and this is a special one. It is a festival that very is about creativity - the music is different from other festivals, there is lots of theater, documentaries, special exhibitions. The festival runs from June 15th to June 24th. In order to get there you need to take the train to Harlingen and you subsequently need to get on a ferry. All in all this may take up to half a day.
The biggest Wadden island is Texel. It is also the fastest one to reach from Amsterdam. If you are just looking to just spend a couple of days away from Amsterdam on a beautiful island, this may be the best option for you.
As the Wadden sea is a very shallow area, it is possible to walk on the bottom of the sea when the tide is low. There are a number of companies that specialize in this. Please get in touch with us if you are looking for advice with booking a tour.the-wadden-islands-and-the-oerol-festival
